Kind is fixed for the life of a discount — create a new one to switch.
Eligibility
Checked once, before any tier — everyone passes unless a rule below says otherwise.

Item groups
Name a set of products once — like “tent kit” or “footprint” — then use that name in your tiers below. A product belongs to the group if it matches any one of the rules you give it; the preset buttons are the fastest way to set up Acme’s common groups.

Checked top-down — the first tier whose conditions all pass wins. Put the richest tier first (e.g. "2+ kits" before "1 kit").

Action
Shopify can only discount items already in the cart — the shopper has to add the gift themselves for it to become free. If it’s missing, the test panel shows "Qualified — gift not in cart" instead of applying the discount.
Schedule & limits
Empty — starts immediately on publish.

Combines with
Total redemptions across every customer. Empty = unlimited.
Shown when the buyer fails eligibility (e.g. not a first-time customer). Leave empty to use the derived reason instead.
Shown when the buyer is eligible but nothing in the cart qualifies for any tier.
Cart
Line items — search a product/SKU or paste a variant GID
Real Acme catalog data (tags, collections, price) is fetched live for each line. The search index can lag a just-published product — use the keyboard icon to paste a variant GID directly instead.
