Yes, for one store you can build a small app with an AI assistant. It's a custom app, which Shopify says is built "exclusively for your Shopify store". It works best for apps that only read your own orders and customers. An app you sell to other stores is a different job, because Shopify reviews public apps before they are listed. Budget time to review what the AI writes.
What's the difference between your own app and one you sell?
| What | An app for your own store | An app you sell to others |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | Your store only | Many stores |
| Shopify review | Not through the App Store | Yes, before other stores can install it |
| What you maintain | Your app and its hosting | The app, plus support for every store that installs it |
| Where we fit | We build this one | We don't build this one |
Shopify's own help page says creating a custom app "requires development knowledge and can be challenging". That is the gap an AI assistant fills, and it is also why the output needs a careful read.
Where do you create a custom app now?
Shopify's help says custom apps are created and managed in the Dev Dashboard. Store owners have full access. For staff, you assign the "App development > Develop" permission. (Shopify's custom apps page, checked October 13, 2026. It shows no update date, so check the page itself before you start.)
What should you ask the AI to build first?
Our view: one tool that only reads your data. A support inbox that shows each email beside its order. An orders view. A weekly report. A tool that only reads can't change your store, though it still needs care with customer data. A mistake costs you an afternoon, not an order.
When should you keep a bought app, or hire a developer?
- Payments and checkout. Keep these with the companies that do them.
- Sales tax and shipping rates. The rules change, and a mistake costs money.
- Anything you want to sell to other stores. That needs a developer who knows Shopify's review.
Who looks after it afterwards?
You do, with the AI's help, and that's a real job. AI code needs review, and Shopify's tools change. Who fixes a custom Shopify app when it breaks says what that looks like.
Questions
Can I build a Shopify app with Claude Code?
Yes, for your own store. Claude Code can write the app if you describe the job in plain English, and you review what it writes. For an app you sell to other stores, Shopify's review applies.
Do I need to know how to code?
Shopify says creating a custom app requires development knowledge. With an AI assistant you give instructions in plain English, but you still need to read and test the result, or have someone do it.
Is it cheaper than hiring a developer?
Often, for a small read-only app. See what a custom app costs and which apps are worth replacing.
Want it built for you? Book a demo. Prefer to write? Ask a question. Or build it yourself: the kit.
