Can you replace Shopify apps with custom software?

Yes, you can replace Shopify apps with custom software or Claude Code when the app only reads or shows your own orders and customers: a support inbox, reports, invoices, simple bundles, discounts, page tests, size charts and banners. Keep the apps that handle payments, tax, shipping rates or checkout. My rule of thumb, which is an estimate and not a promise: under about $100 a month in apps, keep paying; at several hundred, price a replacement.

Keep or replace

Sorted by what the app does, not by brand. The right-hand figures are the ones I itemised in what my store paid in app subscriptions, and they are my own estimates.

Kind of app Keep or replace Why My bill (estimate)
Payments and checkout Keep Card data and money are the processor's job. Not an app bill
Sales tax Keep Rules change by place; let someone else track them. Not itemised
Shipping rates and labels Keep for now Tied to carrier accounts. Not itemised
Product reviews Keep Collecting, verifying and showing reviews is its own job. Not itemised
Support inbox Replace It shows your own orders beside each customer's email. $500 a month
Reports Replace Your own data, shown the way you want. $30 a month
Bundles Replace, once you know the rules Rules you can write in a sentence. $199 a month
Page tests Replace if you use only a few tests Often a few lines of theme code. $150 a month
Invoices Replace Built from your own orders. $30 a month
Discounts beyond Shopify's own Keep unless it's in your way Rules you can write in a sentence, but $20 a month rarely pays back a build. $20 a month

Not sure which of your apps are worth replacing? Book a demo.

Size charts and banners are the same kind of job as page tests: static content in your theme. I didn't pay for those apps, so I have no figure for them.

Three questions to ask about any app

  1. Does it only show my own data? If it reads your orders and customers and displays them, it can be rebuilt. If it moves money or carries a legal duty, keep it.
  2. Can I describe what it does in one sentence? "It puts the order beside the email" is buildable. "It optimises my checkout" isn't a sentence you can check.
  3. What happens if it breaks at 9am on a sale day? A reporting tool can wait until lunch. Anything that sits in the checkout can't. Start with the tools that can wait.

What it costs, compared honestly

An app is a monthly fee, forever. Software you own is a one-off build, plus the running costs of your own AI plan and hosting, which are listed on what you need. Replacing one $500-a-month inbox pays back fast. Replacing a $20 tool may never pay back, so don't.

If your apps cost $200 or more a month, one app pays back within 12 months (our estimate). Under about $100 a month it usually isn't worth it. Your own hosting and AI plan are still yours to pay.

You have two ways to do it:

  • We build it for you. One app that replaces the ones you rent, connected to your store and your data, for one tool $1,650, two $2,750, three $3,850 and $1,100 for each extra tool, with no monthly fee from us. About a month to build. You're invoiced after a free 30-minute demo, not before. Hosting and your own AI plan are still yours to pay.
  • Do it yourself with the kit. Same starting app and lessons, set up on your own computer. See the kit.

Weighing it against hiring someone? Custom app, freelancer or bought app. Who looks after it afterwards? Who fixes a custom Shopify app when it breaks.

Either way, the way to start is the same: list what you pay for. The free calculator adds it up for you. The step-by-step audit takes about an hour, and how I replaced my own app stack shows what I built first.

Questions

Can Claude Code replace Shopify apps?

For apps that only read and show your own orders and customers, yes: a support inbox, reports, invoices and simple bundles are the kind I replaced. Keep payments, tax and shipping rates.

Is custom software cheaper than Shopify apps?

It can be, when you pay several hundred dollars a month for apps that only show your own data. If your apps total under about $100 a month, keeping them is usually cheaper. Those figures are my own estimates.

Which Shopify apps should I never replace?

Anything that handles payments, tax, shipping rates or checkout. Someone else carries that risk, and you should let them.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You describe what you want in plain English and an AI agent builds it, one tool at a time. If you'd rather not, we can build it for you.
