Terminal

The terminal is a window where you type commands instead of clicking, and text comes back.

Also called: command line, shell

No pictures, no buttons: you type a line, press return, and text comes back.

You'll meet it less than you fear, most of this can be done without ever opening one, but you will meet it, usually to start the app or find out why it didn't.

Two things throw people. It's not dangerous by itself; it does what it's told and nothing else. And it offers no encouragement: a command that worked often says nothing at all. Silence is success.

Something broke

I just did this: <what you clicked or typed, in a few words>
This is what I got: <paste the error here, or drag in a screenshot>

I don't know what it means. Work out what went wrong and fix it. Then tell me in one plain sentence what was wrong and what you changed, and stop.
